Apple Introduces New «Passwords» App at WWDC 2024
For years, cybersecurity experts have predicted the end of online passwords as more modern methods of authentication, from facial recognition to multi-factor authentication, become increasingly popular. But it seems that Apple has accepted that passwords won’t disappear anytime soon. Their new «Passwords» app, introduced at WWDC 2024 this week, aims to secure online accounts and manage multiple logins. However, the risks associated with having all your logins in one place remain relevant.
«Passwords are very difficult to completely get rid of,» said Andras Cher, vice president at Forrester, a leading analyst.
The new «Passwords» app for iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, Mac, and Windows allows users to store all their passwords, including confirmation codes, app passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, Passkeys, and more. The offering is similar to other password managers on the market, such as 1Password and LastPass.
«The importance of having such a standard solution, as well as built-in password security, cannot be underestimated,» said Gajo Sevilla, senior analyst at eMarketer. «This will likely encourage most Apple customers to use this feature. It’s convenient. It’s there. And it’s free.»
Passwords as a Risky Method of Online Security
However, this does not change the fundamental concerns about users relying on passwords as a standard method of online security.
«It’s a step: eliminate the need for any password manager and switch to one-time passwords based on confirmation via push notifications, biometrics, or Passkeys,» said Cher. «Moving away from passwords is likely the right direction, without using free or enhanced password managers.»
