Israeli tanks reach the center of Rafah: a new twist in the conflict

Israeli tanks break into the center of Rafah

Israeli tanks have broken into the center of the city of Rafah for the first time after three weeks of ground operation in the southern sector of Gaza, sparking international condemnation, according to Reuters.

Reuters sources report that the tanks were seen near the Al-Awda mosque, a central landmark in Rafah.

Continued Israeli military operations in Rafah

Israeli military representatives state that their forces are still operating in the Rafah area, without commenting on the advancement towards the city center.

Earlier this year, Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages being taken. Israel responded with a military operation against the militants.

International call for ceasefire

The International Court of the UN has called on Israel to immediately cease its military operation in the city of Rafah in the Gaza sector. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reports that approximately a million Palestinians have fled Rafah in the last three weeks.

Israel maintains that the military operation in Rafah is necessary to eliminate Hamas and free the hostages captured on October 7.
