Energy conservation in Ukrainian schools: recommendations and priorities

Energy Conservation Measures in Education Sector

In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science has implemented energy conservation measures in educational institutions across the country. As a result of enemy missile strikes damaging energy infrastructure facilities, the government has decided to reduce electricity consumption, affecting schools as well.

The MES has issued recommendations for schools to limit the use of air conditioners and external lighting to preserve energy. However, safety remains a top priority, with a focus on ensuring appropriate conditions for conducting classes.

Some exceptions have been made, such as allowing air conditioners to operate during mass exams and air alarms. Educational institutions are required to maintain safety and adhere to sanitary norms, including promoting ventilation by keeping windows open in the summer.

The Ministry calls upon all stakeholders to take responsibility for energy conservation and create a safe and conducive environment for students, teachers, and staff.
