Ukrainian berry farms are facing a new challenge due to the energy crisis, which could significantly affect crop yields. Industry experts are assessing the potential consequences of this problem and discussing ways to overcome it, focusing on the need for irrigation for stable production of berry crops. This was reported by AgroPortal, citing SEEDS.
The lack of electricity in berry farms can have a negative impact on their yields.
This opinion was expressed by Taras Bashtannik, President of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association, in a comment for SEEDS. «If electricity is frequently cut off, companies will not be able to irrigate plants in a timely manner, which can seriously affect yields,» he explained.
The expert also noted that most berry farms can find a way out of the situation by using generators. «Usually, this does not require a lot of kilowatts,» Bashtannik pointed out.
He emphasized that any crop — berry, stone fruit, fruit, or vegetable — almost always requires systematic irrigation. «Without it, it is simply impossible to ensure a stable harvest. For example, sea buckthorn, which sets the yield potential for the next year, requires systematic watering until the end of September. In such climatic conditions as ours, plants can simply die without irrigation,» Bashtannik concluded.
Earlier, there were reports of large-scale government programs to support decentralized energy.
