In the Kharkiv region, enhanced efforts to demine the territory
In a bid to accelerate the process of demining in the Kharkiv region, a Center for Coordination of Mine Action is set to be established. The center will be responsible for creating and updating daily maps of mines in each settlement, providing up-to-date information through a 24/7 hotline, and compiling a database of demining requests.
According to Oleh Synegubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, collaboration is essential to quickly demining the territory. Since the start of the war, there have been 31 cases of agricultural machinery hitting explosive objects in the region, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Efforts are being made to increase the number of personnel and equipment dedicated to demining tasks, with a compensation program in the works for equipment damaged during agricultural work. The current pace of demining in the region is deemed insufficient, with estimates suggesting it could take a century to complete the task.
Despite the challenges, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine has made progress in the region, detecting and disposing of a significant number of explosive objects. With 38 demining units currently active, substantial areas of land have been surveyed and cleared, along with thorough checks on roads, power lines, railway tracks, and gas pipelines.
