A guitar by the German company Framus (model Hootenanny), which belonged to John Lennon and was recently found in the attic of a private house, was sold at auction at the New York Hard Rock Café for $2.9 million, The Guardian reports.
The decisive bid was made over the phone. According to auction organizers, this is the highest amount ever paid for a guitar played by The Beatles. The buyer’s name is not disclosed, following tradition.
It should be noted that this is a 12-string guitar that can be seen in the movie «Help!» during a scene where The Beatles perform the song «You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away».
In the studio, it was used to record songs such as «Help!», «Girl», «It’s Only Love», «I’ve Just Seen a Face», and «Norwegian Wood». The instrument’s provenance is linked to the name of Scottish guitarist Gordon Waller, half of the duo Peter and Gordon, who The Beatles supported in the mid-1960s. Along with the guitar itself, the original case in which it was found has also been preserved.
