The Aravan District Court of Osh Region in Kyrgyzstan Sentenced a Citizen to Five Years in Prison for Participation in War Against Ukraine

The Aravan District Court of Osh Region in Kyrgyzstan has sentenced a citizen to five years in prison with confiscation of property for participating in the war against Ukraine on the side of the Russian occupation forces. This information was reported by the Kyrgyz service of «Radio Free Europe» citing the court’s press secretary.

According to the service, the man was convicted under an article that holds individuals responsible for participating in armed conflicts or military actions on the territory of a foreign state or for undergoing training to carry out a terrorist act (Article 256 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan). The norm provides for a punishment of imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years, but due to the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the term of punishment was reduced. The convicted individual has filed an appeal.

Journalists add that another citizen in Kyrgyzstan was previously sentenced on similar charges to 10 years in prison. However, the Supreme Court overturned the decisions of lower instances and sent the case for a new review, and the court in Bishkek reduced the punishment, sentencing the man to seven years in prison. He was released during the court session and placed under a three-month probationary supervision.
