German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected the proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to use German weapons to shoot down Russian missiles and drones flying over Ukrainian territory. This was reported by the dpa agency on Thursday evening, July 18.

During a press conference after the European Political Community summit in the British city of Woodstock, Chancellor Scholz reiterated his position on rejecting such a proposal from the Ukrainian leader.

Zelensky Calls for Support in War with Russia

Zelensky spoke at the European Political Community summit to call on Kiev’s allies to support him in the war with Russia, specifically by shooting down Russian missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory. He cited the example of the Iranian attack on Israel in April, when more than 300 missiles and drones were shot down with the participation of US, UK, and French air defense systems.

NATO Promises Air Defense Systems for Ukraine

Ukraine had previously called on NATO countries to establish a no-fly zone over its territory since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. However, NATO has rejected this idea, instead promising to strengthen the Ukrainian army with air defense systems.
