The Rewilding Efforts in Budzhak Steppe
The nature conservation organization «Rewilding Ukraine» has announced the reintroduction of wild animals to the territory of Budzhak, once inhabited by European steppes wildlife.
Restoring Natural Grazing
Large herbivorous animals such as wild horses, European roe deer, steppe ground squirrels, and common hamsters have reappeared in the Budzhak steppe to restore natural grazing processes and reduce wildfire risks. Initial adaptation takes place in a large enclosed area, serving as a breeding ground for wild animals.
Growing Population
With the hope of growing naturally, the herd of wild horses in the Odessa region has already shown promising signs with the arrival of the first foals. Last year, 6 young wild horses were born, indicating a positive future for the local population.
Continuing Progress
Despite challenges, the wild horses have weathered the winter season well and are thriving in the steppe. Plans are underway to reintroduce European roe deer in 2024, ensuring the continuity of life in the area.
