Ukrainian refugees in Riga retain the right to free transportation

Renewal of Free Public Transport Discount for Ukrainian Refugees in Riga

According to Latvijas Sabiedriskie Mediji portal, Ukrainian refugees in Riga can continue to use a discount for free public transport that ended on Sunday, June 30.

To continue using free transport until the end of the current year, Ukrainian citizens can renew the discount through ticket machines located at stops and in shopping centers. The procedure takes only a few seconds.

To renew the discount, it is necessary to insert the electronic ticket into the ticket machine, and the discount will be valid until December 31, 2024.

«If you have any doubts or fears about using these devices, you can contact the Ukrainian Support Center, located at 9 Pale Street, Jugla, and get personal assistance. This center operates on weekdays,» said Baiba Bartashevich-Feldmane, a representative of the company «Rīgas satiksme».

It should be noted that refugees from Ukraine registered at the Riga Support Center are entitled to free travel on trams, trolleybuses, and buses. The relevant decision was made by the Riga City Council back in 2022.

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of compensating for the travel discount is approximately between 230,000 and 260,000 euros per month.
